A Quilty Post!!

Yay! Quilting news to blog. I finished the quilting on Caleb’s quilt last week. Today, I made the binding and sewed it to the front of the quilt using my longarm. Got it off the machine and all trimmed and ready for the hand stitching of the binding. I’ve been so anxious to see it off the machine. I did not use a pattern. I just decided what size I wanted the rows and pieces to be and started cutting fabric and sewing. I have to say…I love it!!

Picture overload…it’s huge, so the best I could do tonight was throw it over the sofa. Please ignore the batting fuzz and strings all over it. šŸ˜€

Quilting to Report! :)

For many months after Greg passed, I just couldn’t get back into my quilting. He was so involved in that part of my life. Very interested and so supportive. I just couldn’t get my mojo back. But, finally, the fire is burning within me again. I am working on my projects and it’s bringing me joy. I am trying to turn all my WIP’s into completed items. Or, at least make a good dent in them before I start on new ones. I know that I will not be able to refrain from starting a new thing, here or there, before I finish ALL my WIPs. In the past week, I have quite a little bit of new progress to report.

I finished my “chicken quilt”. Just a simple turning twenty made with mostly chicken themed fabrics, quilted with Willow Leaf studio’s Fancy This panto. I had everything but the binding finished close to two years ago, now. Now, it’s finally draped over the back of my sofa, ready to snuggle up in during the chilly Fall/Winter months. I actually took a little nap under it yesterday.

I pulled out a little pre-cut table runner kit I have had for probably three years now. IĀ  bought it from Chery’s Quilt Corner, in Guymon. It was designed by Judy Rice. I am so happy to see it on my table in time for pumpkin season this year! I quilted it on my longarm. For the pumpkin vines that were supposed to be done by machine or hand embroidery, I just threaded my longarm with some green thread and did them as part of the quilting.

That little table runner just makes me smile. I love pumpkins!

Last night I loaded the Oklahoma Backroads (pattern from Bonnie Hunter’s Quiltville) quilt that I started making for my Mom, back before she was diagnosed with lymphoma. So, I know this has been a WIP for over two years. I pulled it off the longarm just a little bit ago. It’s a scrap quilt, with pretty much bits and pieces of any and ever quilt I had previously made in it. I could have done a better job with the fabric values, which would have made the stars and “roads” stand out better, but she will love it for snuggling up in. It’s so busy that I decided to do a freehand “paisley-ish” allover meander on it, just to give it a nice texture. Also, being that I really avoided my longarm for over a year, and the year before that it was barely used, these little projects are a good way to sharpen up my skills again. I’m a little rusty and these are good confidence builders. I am pleased to report that my longarm just took right off, and is working perfectly, even after all that sitting, waiting for me to come back to her. That was a big relief.

Now to get the binding and a label on it, and it’s soon to be a finish, as well. šŸ™‚ I’m ready for it to go live with Mom!

Greg was in one of my dreams last night. At first, I wanted so badly to dream about him, because it would feel, in a way, as if he was still here, as if I had seen and talked to him. And the funny thing is, those dreams didn’t come right away. Now, when they do, I have really mixed emotions about it. Waking up after one is certainlyĀ  more painful. Because, it does feel as if he was just here, as if I just talked with him, saw him, and possibly even touched him. And then, I wake up.

I alluded to a “special someone” in a previous recent post. Yes, I am seeing someone. But no, that takes nothing away from the loss of what I had.Ā  And, he lives six hours away. Long, but sweet, story. Someday maybe I will share it here. šŸ™‚

In the meantime, I will be trying to figure out the best way to reply to your comments. While I was away, it seems WordPress changed the comment notification emails. It used to be that I could reply directly, and privately to the commenter by replying through the notification email that WordPress sent. That is no longer the case. I can click on the email address of the commenter, and send a whole new email, which is probably what I will begin doing. If I reply through the WordPress email, it posts directly here on the blog, but I don’t know if the commenter gets notification that there has been a repy. Do any of you know? I do read all your comments and have been very lax about responding during these past many months. I intend to start doing better about that again! Thanks for stopping by, and thank you for all the cyber love you have sent my way. šŸ™‚

I just kept sewing yesterday!

By the time yesterday was done,Ā  I had worked a bit on FIVE different quilts.Ā  Well six, if you count the prep work on a customer top I’m fixing to start quilting.Ā  But I made a little bit of progress on five of my own WIP’s.Ā  Yay!

I made great headway on my Boston Commons.Ā  I have one more row like these, then adding white fabric around and between, a pieced border, and then I am going to add an additional plain border all around so I have some more space to quilt feathers in.Ā  The original pattern, which is by Darlene Zimmerman, ends with a narrow border of the the squares and white triangles.

While I was sewing Gracie’s Star together, and while I was piecing on the above quilt, I worked on my leaders/enders quilt, Oklahoma Backroads, and I had my embroidery machine running, cranking out some blocks for a red & white Christmas quilt.

000_9595

And then, when I went to bed, I took my 9P & stripe quilt with me, and worked on knotting and burying some of the thread tails I left on it.Ā  I should have done it while I was going along on it…now it feel like I will never get them all done.Ā  😦  I’m glad I decided to go back to a backtack before I finished.Ā  And I still have to bind it!

I did get my backing and binding picked out for Gracie’s Star.Ā  Now I just have to decide on which quilting pattern I want to use.Ā  I think it’s a bit dark & busy to spend a lot of time on custom, but a pretty allover will finish it off nicely.

The first part of this year I just kept starting new projects.Ā  Maybe this last part will be about finishing!Ā  I would like to finish these projects I have started with my stash fabrics!

Stash Quilt Reporting

I don’t think my reports are about stash busting any more, but what I’ve done with my stash.Ā  I added 5 yards of Kona white cotton back to the stash, since I’m using what I had in my Boston Commons.Ā  That is a staple I like to keep on hand.Ā  I finished by sawtooth star blocks, finally.Ā  And, I think I might like them all together, after all.Ā  If you’ve been following my progress on them, you may remember this previous post, where I posted the ones I had finished together, and then divided into different color groupings and settings.Ā  Well, here is the whole lot of them, finished and laid out how I would sew them together, if I decide to follow the original pattern.

000_9181

I think I do like it.Ā  My husband likes it.Ā  How about a poll?

To see how they looked divided into orange and no orange groups, click the link to the previous post, mentioned above.Ā  I’m curious to see which one wins.Ā  Doesn’t mean I’ll follow it, but I might!

Thankful Tuesday and Early Wednesday WIP

I know it’s usually thankful Thursday, but I’m going early this week on some things.Ā  My Dad is doing much better.Ā  Everything seems to be resolving and doesn’t look like anything too serious is going on with him.Ā  Yay!Ā  My husband had some tests a week ago Friday, one involving what the doctor suspected was another cancerous mole.Ā  But it wasn’t! Yay! And while he was having that biopsied, he also had the blood test that screens for prostate cancer, and that came back normal, also.Ā  Yay!

And I’m thankful for all my blogging friends that sent prayers and kind thoughts.Ā  And thank you all for the encouragement you’ve given about my 9P & stripe! So many sweet comments.Ā  I appreciate them all!

I’ve been doing a bit of piecing on my star blocks again, but I don’t think they are going to end up in the pattern that was intended.Ā  I love the blocks, I love the fabrics, I’m just not loving them together.Ā  So, I think this project is going to go a different direction, which will require a bit of extra thinking on my part…lol.Ā  I think that it’s the orange fabrics not going with the reds…maybe.Ā  At least not when they are butted next to each other, like the pattern.

000_9010

When I pull out the orange ones, I like it better.

000_9013

And the orangesĀ  aren’t bad on their own.

000_9015

But I’m still not really feeling it.Ā Ā  Maybe it’s a value thing…I’m not really sure why I don’t like it, it just doesn’t seem to be working.Ā  But I know these block have the potential to be an awesome quilt, or maybe more than one quilt.

So, I looked closely at the fabrics, and notice that several share a similar green accent color, that happens to be very close the color of this bolt I bought to use for backing fabric.Ā  And I wondered, what if I set them on point, and used this green for setting blocks and triangles?

000_9022

Or, sashing and setting triangles,Ā  with the blocks on point, which I think is my favorite.

000_9025

Even like this, I don’t think the polka dots and oranges go with the rest, and will figure out a way to put them together, on their own.Ā  What do you think? Am I on a better track with this?

More 9P & stripe…26.5 hours into it…y’all are going to get tired of seeing this one.

I’m not sure I am making all the right design choices…but, this is a learning project for me.Ā  A project to expand my skills and challenge myself, so I’m ok with that.Ā  For example, I’m not sure the large size setting triangle feather is working that well, but even so, I’ll probably just go forward with it.Ā  I’m having fun!

That scroll-y design is a Karen McTavish stencil.Ā  The setting blocks are stencils, as well, but I forgot to see who from.Ā  I’ll get that later, for anyone interested.Ā  I’m at work now, but remembered that I forgot to mention that.

Quilting Feathers, Feathers, & More Feathers

First, I cannot let Memorial Day go by without stating my thanks and appreciation for all the brave men and women that have served, or do serve in the armed forces, to afford the rest of us the wonderful freedom that we enjoy.Ā  So many sacrifices they have made, many the ultimate sacrifice.Ā  And thank you to their families.Ā  Though saying thank youĀ  doesn’t seem enough.

With the crosshatching behind me, I got to start quilting feathers today.Ā  I love feathers.Ā  Love quilting them, love the way they look.Ā  I did not want to crosshatch the striped border, even though that would have matched the stripes in the interior.Ā  Instead, I chose this pretty stencil by Barbara Chainey.Ā  I’m liking it.

First, is the chalking.

000_8955

Then the stitching begins.

000_8967

000_8956

000_8962

Three hours later, one border done.Ā  (it didn’t feel like it took that long)

000_8969

000_8971

000_8972

Much more fun that crosshatching.Ā  So, I guess I have about 9 hours left to finish the other three of these borders.Ā  This one is going to be on the machine for awhile yet.Ā  I have a plan for that little inner border that matches the setting triangles.Ā  I have a plan for the setting triangles.Ā  I have not yet decided on the very outside border…maybe swags.Ā  Maybe not.Ā  Maybe more feathers.

I took time out this morning to relocate this litte guy from the back patio, to the front flower bed, so he would be safe from Tuffy and Libby. I took the top off of Tuffy’s feeder to catch him with.Ā  The lizard was not happy about it…if he only knew, it really was for his own good.Ā  Tuffy would have caught him and eaten him, eventually.Ā  Libby would have just killed him.Ā  I like lizards.

000_8951 (Medium)

Now he lives here.Ā  Plenty of cover and should find lots of bugs to eat.

One Block Wondering

Ok, so I’ve told y’all that I’m supposed to take a One Block Wonder class with the quilt guild, but it isn’t til April 18th.Ā  Who can wait that long, once they have the book already? Not me! I had to go ahead and do some playing.Ā  I finally felt like fondling some fabric again, and instead of working on one of the gazillion projects I already have started, I wanted to do something new.Ā  Maybe it’s spring fever.Ā  Since we are doing the octagon version at guild, I pulled out the original fabric from my stash, that I wanted to use, but didn’t have enough for the eight repeats needed.Ā  Since the hexagon version doesn’t use as much fabric, I have enough for it.

The fabric, with my new rotary cutter laying on it, just because I noticed that it matches…lol!

The first set of blocks:

000_85181

This is so hard to stop working on, once you start.Ā  Each block is a little surprise.Ā  I can’t wait to see how the next row of blocks turns out, and how they look added into these.Ā  Not only are the blocks a surprise, but you don’t know what the quilt will look like, either, till you get all the blocks together, and start playing with them.Ā  Too much fun!

Sunday Stash Report

Wow, I went a whole week between posts.Ā  But it was a busy week with my day job, so there wasn’t much to say.Ā  Not that I could post about, anyway.

I do have changes to report in my stash this week.Ā  I busted 10 yards for backing, and it is just barely going to be big enough for my top.Ā  I knew it would be close, but I really want to use this fabric for the back of this quilt.Ā  It’s flannel, so I think there may have been a bit more shrinkage than I might have had with a regular cotton.

000_8222

000_8223

As you can see, it’s a real tight squeeze on the sides.Ā  I have plenty extra the other direction, though.Ā  I will make it work!

I also ordered 8 yards for a one block wonder class I’m taking next month, for quilt guild.Ā  I tried my best to find something suitable in my stash, but the only two that I thought would work, I did not have enough yardage.Ā  So I had to order some.Ā  It will arrive some time this week, but I’m going to go ahead and count it as incoming today.

So here’s my yearly totals.

  • Incoming Yardage to date: 8 yds.
  • Outgoing Yardage to date:Ā  30.5 yds.
  • Total Stash Busted to date: 22.5 yds.
I also finished the binding on the memorial t-shirt quilt, and made the label.Ā  I just have to attach the label and it will be completely finished.Ā  I was able to use some of the scraps from the first quilt, made of his plaid cotton shirts, in the back of this one.
000_8219
000_8221
000_8220
I also made some good progress on one of my stash quilts today.Ā  My Boston Commons top.
000_8224
Now, I have to decide how I want to quilt my 9P & stripe, that I made the backing for.Ā  It is going on the longarm next! And it’s MINE! Yay!
Have a great week! Try to find time for something you love to do!

Wednesday WIP, 2-25-09

Still working on Spiderman.Ā  What I thought was going to be “light custom” is taking me much longer than I expected.Ā  This is part of the longarm learning curve I am still trying to get around, determining what quilting goes in which pricing level.Ā  This one is much more time consuming than I had envisioned it.Ā  But live and learn.Ā  I find these kind of quilts quite challenging to begin with, and I just hope my customer likes how I have decided to quilt it.Ā  I am quilting word related to Spiderman, and the child’s name in the outer borders, along with some spiders, and then just an angular meander around that.

000_8182

000_8185

I am putting four spider webs, in the four corners of the inner borders, treating them as one, then doing the same angular meander in between the webs.Ā  For the very inner blue border, I just did a good old puzzle meander in the red thread.

000_8183

000_8176

I decided to do a bit of outlining on Spiderman, and will quilt on the webs behind him, in the center panel.Ā  I still have some outlining to finish, and I think I will connect the spiders with a wave black line.

000_8177

000_8178

Yeah…”light” custom….well, I’ll know better next time…lol.Ā  If it has Dorothy and her little dog on it, or cartoon characters, etc., unless doing a pantograph allover, it’s full custom. šŸ™‚
