My baby is 18!!

Happy 18th birthday to my son!  We are grilling some shrimp skewers and having chocolate pudding delight for his “cake”.

And, I’m happy to report that Zapper showed up for dinner on the patio last night.  So he really did come through ok.  I don’t know if he would’ve been ok if I had left him buried in that pile of hail or not.  I like to think I rescued him.  And one of the baby doves did survive, but it sure looked lonesome all by itself on the roof last night.  I haven’t seen it today, so maybe it is now happily flying around.

And Gayle, that yellow bellied bird you asked about…I believe it is a Western Kingbird.

I’m off to have birthday dinner with my boy young man.

And then the blasted hail came :-(

Last night,  a storm blew in with a vengeance.  I was about to drift off to sleep when the hail started pounding the house.  It was fairly small, mostly marble size, but relentless.  I stood watching out the patio door, helplessly wondering about the baby doves and my favorite toad, Zapper.  He had not come to the patio last night, which he does about every other night, to eat his fill of June bugs and other insects, underneath the patio light.  This has been his (or her) routine for the past three summers.  I’ve grown very fond of this toad.  I had seen him last, laying underneath the iris leaves, in the southwest corner of our yard,  one of his favorite hangouts. When the hail finally let up, I threw on a rain jacket over my jammies, slipped on a pair of flip flops, grabbed a flashlight, and went to check on him. It was after midnight.  It was raining. I know, most sane people would’ve gone to bed.   It’s a TOAD.  But,  I couldn’t.  I had to look.  When I rounded the corner of the house, and the light hit “his spot”, I was so afraid of what I would find.  The hail had completely covered his little corner, like a snow drift.  I began to dig it away, and sure enough under about two inches of a solid pile of round hail stones, was Zapper.  As I got more moved away, he wiggled his leg.  I got him pulled out and he was so freezing cold.  I went straight back to the patio with him, where I could get a better look at him.  He looked ok, and once he got warmed up, he ate a couple of June bugs on the patio.  Then he hopped off.  I haven’t seen him today, so I hope he didn’t have internal injuries.

And sadly, at least one of the little doves is dead.  I’m not sure about the other one.  I *may* have seen it this morning as I was leaving for work, still alive, but I couldn’t be sure.  I haven’t found it’s body, so hopefully it made it.

The yard is littered with leaves from our trees. This was the view of the backyard this morning.

And this is the little hole where Zapper was.  He was literally buried in hail.

Poor little things didn’t stand a chance, it hit so hard & fast.  But other than that, all is well.  It could’ve been much worse.  I know that.  And I am thankful that it wasn’t.  It’s all part of the circle of life, the natural order of things.  But that doesn’t mean I can’t be a little sad for a little bird (or a toad) for a few moments, does it?

It’s like a birdie nursery around here!

Meet a few of the new kids in the neighborhood.

Babies in the next door neighbor’s tree, that overhangs part of our front yard.  Mama, Daddy or both were really squawking at us while we were looking up at them, and I was taking pics.

Of course the swallows came back to nest above my front door again.  Oh the mess they make.  But this is the 2nd batch of babies this year.  Soon they will be fledglings, and I can clean it all up again.

And this is a pair of dove babies.  They spend most of the time hanging out on my roof, underneath the mimosa tree branches that hang over.  Once in awhile they fly over to the neighbor’s roof, and then back to ours, or a branch in the mimosa tree.  Aren’t they little cuties?

This is a picture that has one of the parents in it, and they were on the neighbor’s roof, at the time.

Sunday Reporting!

Hi y’all! I’m back from our trip.  Golf was not kind to my son last week.  But he kept an amazing attitude the whole time.  I am so proud of that kid.  He never lost his cool, and put every hole behind him and tried his best on the next one.

I also wanted to say I am loving using Google Reader to keep up with my blog reading.  I caught up with so many posts yesterday, and it was so easy.  I got my whole blogroll moved over to it, and will be adding some new ones to it, as it makes it soooo much easier to keep up with all y’all.

I looked for a cool quilt shop to visit while in Abilene, but wasn’t able to find one.  So, as far as my stash report, it remains unchanged.  None in, none out.  However, this weekend I have gotten to get back to quilting on my 9P & stripe, and it is a stash project. A big one. I have another set of borders finished, two to go.  And, I’m afraid the final two will be problematic, because I did not follow the rules.  I did not have enough fabric to leave myself enough extra backing on the edges.  Since it’s my own quilt, I’m going to try to forge ahead, but I may end up having to try to add some strips, which will not be easy at this point.  Someone slap me.  I know better, really.   Yesterday, I quilted the swags and beadboard, and today I did the Georgian feather strip.  I love feathers.  I love quilting feathers.  A few progress pics for you, even though they aren’t much different than what I’ve posted from this one before.  But, I’ve been seriously lacking blog content lately, and I guess same old, same old is better than none at all.

Blogroll Changes

I find that when my life gets busier, I have trouble keeping up with the blogs I like to read.  So, I’ve been playing around with different ways to keep up, other than the “blogroll”.  I miss so much just clicking on the links every so often.  I have been using the “blog surfer” to keep up with some of my favorite Worpress blogs, but I find that I still miss out, if I go a few days without checking that, and it doesn’t help me as far as the blogs that are not hosted on WordPress.  So, awhile back I moved a few of my faves or “must reads” to Google Reader, to try that out, and I think I like that method pretty well.  It shows a whole listing of the blogs I read, and will tell me right there on the list which ones have new posts, without having to click on each one to see.  If you have previously been on my list, and see yourself missing, think nothing of it…you’ve most likely just been moved to my reader list.  Eventually, I’ll get everyone moved over and hopefully I won’t miss as much that way.

Another Time Sucker

I ordered a new quilting toy to play with.  I finally joined the EQ6-ers.  Oh. My. Gosh.  What a time sucker…I could sit and play with this software for hours…literally…hours.  And I don’t have hours to spare! LOL

I did start sewing my sawtooth stars together…and the winner was……….drumroll, please…….sew them together as is! You knew it, didn’t you?  I only have one row together…after I get row two together and sewn to row one,  I will  know for sure if this is my final answer.  I may take them back apart and start over, with sashing.  We’ll see.  Thank you to everyone who took time to participate in my poll!

This is another week of golfing for my son, so I will be very scarce.  It will continue this way until after school starts in August.  I hope y’all are having a great summer!

I’ll leave you with some pretty zinnia photos from my yard.

Stash Quilt Reporting

I don’t think my reports are about stash busting any more, but what I’ve done with my stash.  I added 5 yards of Kona white cotton back to the stash, since I’m using what I had in my Boston Commons.  That is a staple I like to keep on hand.  I finished by sawtooth star blocks, finally.  And, I think I might like them all together, after all.  If you’ve been following my progress on them, you may remember this previous post, where I posted the ones I had finished together, and then divided into different color groupings and settings.  Well, here is the whole lot of them, finished and laid out how I would sew them together, if I decide to follow the original pattern.

I think I do like it.  My husband likes it.  How about a poll?

To see how they looked divided into orange and no orange groups, click the link to the previous post, mentioned above.  I’m curious to see which one wins.  Doesn’t mean I’ll follow it, but I might!
