Blog Birthday Party!

It’s my 1 year WordPress blog birthday party, and you are invited!  Thank goodness I checked in on one of my favorite bloggers, Kay, yesterday, and saw that she was having her one year blogiversary.  It reminded me that mine was coming up soon, so I hopped back on over to mine to see, and soon it was indeed! It’s today!  I have enjoyed sharing with you this past year.  I am always amazed that so many of you keep coming back to visit me.  I’m not the most interesting blogger, not the wittiest, nor most creative.  I’m not sure why you keep coming back, but thank you! Thank you for taking the time to visit and share with me.  What will we do to celebrate?  How about a reward challenge?  If you are a “survivor” of reading Randi’s ramblings this past year, I think you deserve a chance at a reward.  What is the challenge?  It’s simple.  Just comment on this blog birthday party post, by the time I stumble out of bed this coming Saturday morning, and settle in front of the computer with my cup of coffee.  (that is usually somewhere between 7:30 and 9:00 am central time-sorry I can’t be more specific 🙂 it depends on how tired I am)  So, Survivors, wanna know what you are playing for?  How about  one yard cuts off of the five cheeriest, most partying looking bolts of fabric I have in my stash?

Worth playing for?  If so, get those comments coming! You have til I become conscious on Saturday morning to be included in the drawing!  I will post the winner shortly thereafter.  Good luck!

Time For the Weekly Stashbusting Report!

I resisted all tempation to buy new fabric, that came my way! Zero yardage added to the stash this week.  Seriously, I have reached a point where my stash *almost* overwhelms me.  I really do want to reduce the amount I have on hand, so that I can keep my closet neater, and have more storage space for my longarm quilting thread.  I used 4.5 yards just playing around with my new Circle Lord, and practicing stencils, and other designs.  So it ends up as a dog or cat blanket before heading to the trash.  It’s still out of my stash!  I also used a three yard piece for backing for my Storm At Sea.  Yes, I started quilting it today!  That gives me 7.5 yds busted this week.  YTD totals are:

  • Incoming 66 yds.
  • Outgoing 63 yds.
  • Total busted YTD -3 yds.

Woohoo! I’m almost to a positive number!

Wanna see a peek at my Storm At Sea?   I’ve been really intimidated by this one, and have put the quilting off a long time…

If it turns out well enough, I might even put it in some quilt shows.  There are a few area shows I’ve recently become aware of, and it might be a fun experience.  I’ve even got a name picked out.  I’m still undecided about what to do in the big diamond shapes.  I’ll be saving those for last.  At least I’m liking it so far, and will have a pretty Storm At Sea to hang on my wall, which is all I really wanted in the first place!

I forgot to do my weigh-in this morning, but I did weigh yesterday morning, and I’m still stuck…145.  That’s a miracle, considering how I’ve been eating!

How did you do with your stashbusting this week? Don’t forget to stop by Judy’s and let us know!

Quilting Playtime Was Fun! (no snakes…lol)

I had fun yesterday playing with my Circle Lord.  I found that the Featherz template works a whole lot better when you rotate the disc the right direction.  DUH! 🙂  I’m still getting some backtracking issues, but the 3rd wreath I did was better than the 1st or 2nd.  Like anything, it’s going to take some PPP to get the hang of it.  But so far, me likes!

I also did just a bit of playing with some freehand fillers and feathers. Nothing fancy, it was just fun to lay down a bit of thread.  I have recently made some adjustments to my longarm, retiming, and some adjustments to the electronics that affect the stitching speed, etc., and I wanted to make sure I have the tension back to good, and that I was getting pretty stitches.

Sometimes it’s fun to just do some quick, easy stitching just to watch the pretty thread stitch out.

I also used my practice piece to try my hand at a couple of stencils.  Becoming proficient at freehand stitching of stencils is one of my longarm goals.  My first attempt at this beautiful stencil by Anita Shackelford.  I still need some practice, but I was very pleased for a first try.

I had to purchase this stencil, after Carla B. over at Feathered Fibers kept posting beautiful quilts, on which she had used this stencil.  One of the quilts can be seen here.

This is a stencil I am planning on using on one of my 9P & Stripe quilts.  I wish I could credit the maker, but the sticker came off of it, and I don’t know who designed this one.  I really like it, it was easy to stitch, on the very first try, and I think it looks really good.

I haven’t started on my Storm at Sea, as I got up with stupid muscle spasms, under my left shoulder blade and around my left rib cage.  Usually it’s my right side.  DH massaged the muscles, I have iced it a couple times, hot tubbed, and taken Aleve and some pain meds with some muscle relaxer in it.  And, it seems to be working, so I don’t want to overdo.  Darn, guess that means I’ll have to take it easy on the housework, too!  I am so happy to report, that since I added massage therapy to my chiropractic treatment, my usage of Imitrex has gone way down.  I was going through a 9 dose refill every single month.  Sometimes, having to wait a few days before I could get a refill.  After starting chiropractic treatment, I noticed a refill was lasting me about 2 months.  Since I started massage therapy earlier this year, even more improvement.  I took the first dose out of my last refill on 3-1-08.  I took the last dose on our way home from our vacation trip (and I think that headache was prompted by the heat and sinuses after being on the golf course four days in a row) on 6-27-08.  So far, I haven’t had to take one out of my new pack.  That is a little over four months!  Anybody that suffers from migraines will understand how significant that is.  It’s a huge improvement to quality of life.

My son told me last night, that the baby girl (her name is Riley) is also battling Salmonella.  So, I don’t know for sure if she has e. coli and salmonella, or if something has gotten lost in translation between two teenagers, and they have changed the diagnosis to salmonella.  Whatever, she is still very, very sick.  He said they haven’t been able to get much food down her, and what she has taken in, has come right back up.  God bless her.  I do hope the next news is good.  Thank you for your prayers and concern.

BTW, I didn’t mean my last post to sound like I was upset with any of my readers about my snake.  Just saying that I can’t make any promises! 🙂  Have a good one! Chat at ya later!

Tearing Myself Away From My New Toy

I hope all my American readers are having a Happy Independence Day! I should be using this holiday off from my day job to be cleaning up this messy house around me, but instead I’ve been playing with my new toy that arrived just in time for this three day weekend.  I purchased a practically brand new Circle Lord , and a few extra templates, from a fellow longarmer, that has gone to a computerized set up.  So far, I really like the Squircles (the square templates you use to make circles), and I think I’ll get a lot of use from them.  I tried the Featherz template briefly, last night, and can tell that will take a bit of trial and error to get right.  The Gingko template is pretty cool.  I’m having troubles getting my stops & starts to match up neatly, and not look so messy.  Lots of thread snipping…I know some of that will just take practice, and getting comfortable with it.

I’m hoping to find a way to use it on my Storm at Sea top, which I’m just about mentally geared up to quilt now.  Hopefully, I will start on it this weekend.  Cross your fingers for me!

I feel I must apologize to everyone who was offended by the snake in my previous post.  In my defense, I never even considered that it would be so upsetting to some.  I have never been afraid of, or disgusted by snakes, even as a small child.  In fact, they fascinate me.  Can I promise to never post anymore snake pictures, ever again, on my blog?  Hmmm…no, I can’t promise it won’t ever happen again…but I’m sure it will be a rare event. 🙂 But I’ll try to warn you not to look if you don’t like snakes!  And just out of curiosity, did anybody like my snake pic?

And, on that note, I do want to share with you some old pictures of me.  This first one was taken when I was 15.  The snake belonged to friend of ours.  It’s an Indian Rock python, measuring 6.5 ft.  (DO NOT SCROLL DOWN ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE A SNAKE) 😉

The next photos are one year later, I’m 16 and the snake is 7.5 ft.

If anyone is still reading at this point, have a great holiday weekend! Remember to be careful with those firecrackers!  And Happy 8th Birthday to my sweet Liberty Belle (Libby).

Now I must quit playing for awhile and do some actual housework.  Will I get it finished before I go back to playing with my new toy? I seriously doubt it!

Saturday, 6-21-08

I don’t have much to post today, but I wanted to share a new favorite thing I found yesterday.  I went to the local Hallmark to pick up a wedding gift, and saw this by the register.

It’s Bee Bar Lotion.  At first glance, I thought it was soap.  But it’s a little lotion bar.  Just perfect to run the ends of your fingers over when they feel dry from hand stitching.  Or any other time.  Smells good, too.

I was going to give Corky (my longarm) her spa treatment today, but I decided to give my sewing hook a close look, since I’d experienced that thread breakage on the last quilt.  I thought I might have it timed a bit too closely to the hook.  While cleaning it thoroughly, I noticed that the tip of the hook felt quite rough.  Hmmm…could this be a thread shredding burr?  I gently polished it smooth, and then I went to tweak my timing.  Not an activity I usually have trouble with, but today, I was all thumbs.  I lost a set screw, finally found that.  I had a terrible time trying to get the timing set today.  And things got a lot worse before they got better.  First, I had lots of skipping, so I knew the hook was too far from the needle.  So I scootched it in some.  Then, I kept getting worse breaks, even having sanded out the burr.  I think, I hope, I finally got it back to good.  I have good tension, anyway! Longarming…it can be such a love/hate relationship.  Mostly love!  But it does have it’s moments of misery.  How does the hook get a burr? Anyone know?  I fiddled with it til I got it stitching good again, and the thread (Rainbows) didn’t break after quite a lot of stitching, even at a fast speed.  I won’t get to even touch my longarm again, til next weekend at the earliest.  So I’ll have my fingers crossed til I can give her a good test.  I sure thought I had her screwed up good, there for awhile.  I didn’t even get around to giving her the spa treatment. Have a great week everyone!  I prolly won’t be around much for a few days!

Sunday Report, June 15th, 2008

Stash reporting is a bit boring again.  I didn’t buy any new fabric.  I did finish my cousin’s pillow shams, which used up another 3 yds of stash.  I’m still in the negative for YTD, with 66 yds coming in, 51.25 going out, leaving me with -14.75 yds used.  Bit by bit, I’m getting closer to a positive number!

These are my first pillow shams.

I finished the quilting on the charity quilt for the local guild.  This is the 2nd of two that I donated my quilting services for.  These quilts will go to a rehab facility for wounded soldiers.  While I was quilting, I said prayers for the soldiers that will be using this.  The blocks and border were string piecing on a fabric foundation.  I’m not sure exactly what fabric was used, but it appears to have a very tight weave, and I had thread breaks on every row.  Usually two, sometimes three, always at the corner end of the very top row.  I loosened the quilt sandwich, tried a larger needle, turned the eye of the needle a bit to the right, tried it with the stitch regulator on and off, etc.  Nothing helped.  Still shredded and broke every row.  That was frustrating, but I reminded myself it was nothing compared to what the soldiers are going through.  The only thing I can attribute it to was that foundation fabric and the thickness of the seams.  Anyway, it’s done, and I hope the guild is happy with it, and doesn’t mind that I had to do a bit of overstitching where the thread broke.  You really have to look to find them, anyway.  I decided overstitching a bit was the best way to deal with them, as I wanted to make sure the stops & starts would be secure, since this quilt will be used.

This is the back.

You can see one of the thread break spots above the “L” in this next pic.

This is the back of the quilt top.

I got a new haircut Friday.

Yesterday, DH had to shut the water off in the alley, so he could work on a leak on one of our toilets.  He called for me to come see this in the hole where the shut off is located…

Black widow…it gave me heebie geebies.

Caterpillar sighting!  Something has been eating lots of my little caterpillars, and I’m suspecting wasps. This guy, however, looks like he will make it to the finish line.  I hope my friend Anita sees this!  Her favorite thing on my blog are the caterpillar pics.  For you, Anita! Enjoy!

Still no loss, no gain to report on the weight.

Oh YES! I had to come back and add how happy I am that Dale, Jr. won the race today! WOOHOO!

Sunday Reporting

No new stash usage to report.  No new stash bought.  I was hoping to have the pillow shams finished today, but I didn’t manage to get that accomplished.  I do have the tops quilted and cut out.  Just didn’t have enough steam today to do the backs.

I’ve been playing with the block layouts for my dad’s log cabin quilt.  I am emailing him pics, as I lay them out.  So far, we both like the barn raising layout better than anything else I’ve tried, including the windmill layout I had planned on using.  It just wasn’t doing it for me.  The “windmills” kind of got lost.  I am proud to report that as I was piecing the blocks, I went ahead and cut the scraps into 2.5 inch strips or squares, for a future leaders/enders project in blues & creams.

I’m trying to keep up with the scraps as I go from now on. I am still trying to get the sack full I already had cut into strips & squares.  I did get more bricks and squares cut from that sack this week, to use in the Oklahoma Backroads quilt.

In non-quilting related news, my son won 1st place in his age division in the Jim Hitch Memorial golf tournament, in Guymon, Ok.  He played in it Friday and Saturday.  I thought the wind was going to blow us completely away yesterday.  My face was just gritty feeling from the dirt.  Yuk.  This is his 2nd year in a row to win first in his group.  If he plays all four years of his high school term, and has the lowest cumulative score of all the boys his age that played all four years, he will win the four year trophy, also.  It’s a very nice tournament and we really enjoy it.

Happy Mother’s Day & Sunday Reporting

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms reading.  Hope your day is wonderful.  I enjoyed celebrating with my Mom & family yesterday.  DS (with some help from my Mom) gave me a gift certificate to Sand’s Fabrics in Pampa, one of my favorite shops.  Everyone there is so nice.  I did not buy any fabric with my certificate, but another Eleanor book I have been wanting.  And, I bought myself one of the Fons & Porter marking pencils.  I tested it on a scrap last night and I think I am really gonna like this marking pencil.

I quilted up four more yards of fleece fabric this week, so that moves out of my stash! Yippee!  I have several more yards of fleece in my fabric closet and it takes up a lot of space.

I share some flowers from my front yard with you for Mother’s Day!

On a Fleece Roll

My customer picked up her state flower quilt yesterday and loved it.  She hugged me three times, she was so happy.  Which of course, made me so happy, too!

I finished up another fleece today, except for the “fringing”.  Still need to do that part.  This one is a thank you gift for a local business man that did a very nice thing for my son & the rest of the high school golf team.  It’s one of those times where “thank you” just doesn’t seem quite enough, but what do you do for a man who has everything?  So, I thought he might like a snuggly fleece blanket made by me…a gift from the heart.  I laid it out on the grass in the backyard, in the sunshine, trying to capture the true color of it, but, the pictures do not show the true color…it’s a deep chocolate brown.

Ready for more birds? I worked hard yesterday to get these to share with you.  My swallows are back to nest above my front door again.  It gets a little messy, but I don’t have it in me to run them off.  Besides, they eat lots of pesky skeeters.  Enjoy the show!

And while I was sitting below in my lawn chair looking up, I spied this under the edge of the shingles.  I had to share it for Jan 🙂  Praying mantis egg.

I have a stressful week ahead due to my day job.  Think lots of good thoughts for me.  It involves having to testify in a court hearing, in a county over five hours from here.  I keep praying I won’t have to go, but I don’t see that happening…so you prolly won’t hear much more from me til later this week.

Sunday Wrap Up

I did not buy any new fabric. 🙂  I used four yard of fleece fabric to make a wedding gift for a special young woman that is getting married this month.  I hope she likes it.  I still have to trim and fringe the edges.  I noticed that in her selections, she had some purple glasses, and there was some green on her dishes.  So I used a deep purple fleece with a seafoam green.  Not exactly the same green, but it was the closest I could get with my fleece.  The color does not show true at all in this photo.

The purple side:

So (I suppose I can include fleece fabric yardage used in my totals), that moves 4 more yards of fabric from my stash, bringing my year to date totals to:

  • In: 66 yds.
  • Out: 28.25 yds.
  • YTD: 37.75 yds.

Now, before you think I’ve been soooo good…I bought about $200.00 worth of thread, and $60.00 worth of stencils.

I’ve been enjoying Vicki W.’s birdwatch updates on her blog, so I’m going to share a little birdwatching of my own with you today.  Earlier this week I caught a glimpse of this pheasant rooster in the field behind my house.  About the time I’d go to take a good pic, he’d duck back down in the grass.

This morning, as DH & I were standing in the front of our garage, watching the swallows that are rebuiling on our front entryway, and the cute little finches at our birdfeeder, we were surprised by this treat.  DH ran into get my camera for me, and I was only able to get this one pic before he left.  I do believe it’s a Baltimore Oriole.  Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.  When the sun was hitting him and we could get a good look, before we had the camera of course, his underside was a  bright orange.  I believe it’s more common to see the Scott’s Oriole here.  This little guy was gorgeous.

I realized this morning that I’ve been lax on the Sunday weigh-in, so I bit the bullet and got back on the scale.  I did workout twice this week, but I’ve been not so good til then, and have gained 2 lbs. back.  I started at 154, and now I’m 145, so I’m at a total loss of 9 lbs.  Got to get back on track with that!
